The Language of Loss

So many of us have suffered the pain and heartbreak of deep loss. We are actually victims since we did not cause or even anticipate our loss. We enter and venture into a new territory of feelings and emotions that have never been experienced. We learn a new language; it is the language of loss.

The Language of Loss

When you experience deep loss
You learn a new language, but you pay the cost
Words that had no meaning before
Now you cannot hide from or ignore
Searing hurt and guttural pain
Unasked knowledge is the brutal gain

Never again to be the former or same
Only permanent lasting change remains
No second chance, no replay, no going back
Your prior world is lost, has gone off track
A new, unexpected fate has been laid and cast
This is the unforeseen future that will now always last

New words linger, fester, and torment the mind
Looking and searching, but no cure to find
Thoughts streaming with no logic or control
Trying to discover your new identity and role
A different, foreign reality has been discovered
You pray and wish it was some other

Into your broken heart a lasting scar is torn
An indelible badge branded now worn
Sadness and suffering are your close friends
Desolation and depression are new kin
Longing for something that now can't be
Things desired and wants never to see

How to survive and keep on going
Trying to find your way, but not knowing
Burdens so hard and painful to bear
You wish your heart did not ache, did not care
This journey uncharted, destination unknown
But one you must maneuver and venture alone

To survive, God's promises are the sole answers and hope
Language of loss, only He can help you to cope
He can hold you up by grasping your hand
With Him by your side, you know you can
Quietly listening for His still small voice
God will lead the way if you make the choice

"For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you,
Do not fear; I will help you."

"..and provide for those who grieve in Zion-- to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair." Isaiah 61:3a
